Dr. Horn is proud to provide regenerative therapy for many inflammatory conditions of the feet. One of his non-surgical treatments is Miami Beach shockwave therapy, or extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Shock wave therapy is a noninvasive method that uses pressure waves to treat various musculoskeletal conditions. High-energy acoustic waves (shock waves) deliver a mechanical force to the body’s tissues. Dr. Horn uses shockwave therapy to treat degenerated tendons (Achilles tendonitis) and heel pain (plantar fasciitis). Complications are infrequent with shockwave therapy. People who have poor sensation (neuropathy) or hypersensitivity in the target area should not have this procedure. Open sores should also be avoided. Shockwave therapy is not used in patients with heart conditions or seizures. It should not be used during pregnancy. This should be discussed with your physician before undergoing the procedure.

The procedure is simple. Dr. Horn places gel to the affected area to help conduct the waves and then uses a noninvasive probe on the skin. An electrical charge creates an energy wave that is focused on the area of concern. The shockwaves create a force on the tissues that may induce healing. Miami Beach shockwave therapy is an outpatient procedure. High- or low-energy waves may be used. High-energy waves may cause pain and require a local or regional anesthetic. Low-energy shock wave therapy often is performed without anesthesia. Therapy is more successful with active patient participation where the patient tells the therapist whether or not the probe is at the area of pain. One or more treatment sessions may be needed to address the condition. If you suffer from foot pain and are looking for a cutting-edge approach to getting better, give Dr. Horn a call today.

There are few professionals who understand the complexities of the feet and ankles as well as Dr. Merrick L. Horn. With over 40 years as a leading podiatrist, Dr. Horn is a skilled specialist who can provide effective treatments for foot and ankle conditions. In addition to his medical knowledge and anatomical fluency, this board certified podiatrist is also an athlete with a subspecialty in sports injuries related to the lower leg, ankle and foot. Regenerative medicine is a cutting-edge field of medical treatment that uses the human body’s own natural healing ability in exciting new ways. By harnessing and concentrating the power of an incredibly versatile type of cell called an adult stem cell, scientists and doctors have developed promising treatments for many types of injuries and illnesses involving lost, damaged, or aging cells. The use of stem cells injections are part of the innovative treatments Dr. Horn offers his patients. A basic Miami Beach stem cell procedure lasts about 45 minutes or less. Dr. Horn will retrieve bone marrow percutaneously from the iliac crest of your hip. The aspirated bone marrow will then be concentrated into a smaller volume, devoid of plasma and red blood cells. Finally, he will deliver your concentrated stem cells back to the target site for regeneration. After a joint injection, you can typically go back to work immediately. It is advised to avoid load-bearing activities for at least 2 weeks. In any stem cell procedure, anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) should be withheld for 72 hours pre-procedure and one week post-procedure.

Dr. Horn’s mission is to work together with you to realize a shared vision of uncompromising excellence and to provide the latest in podiatric advances, such as Miami Beach stem cell therapy. Foot Treatment in North Miami Beach

What is regenerative therapy in North Miami Beach

Dr. Merrick L. Horn understands how important it is to be on top of cutting edge medical advances. He has been a leading podiatrist offering foot treatment in North Miami Beach for over 40 years and is a skilled specialist. In addition to his medical knowledge and anatomical fluency, this board certified podiatrist is also an athlete with a subspecialty in sports injuries related to the lower leg, ankle and foot. As a specialist in comprehensive lower leg, ankle, foot, and hammertoes, Dr. Horn utilizes the latest technology available, like regenerative therapy, to serve the needs of his patients, young and old.

Regenerative therapy harnesses the body’s own ability to heal. Dr. Horn has demonstrated great success using Plasma Rich Platelet injections for foot treatment in North Miami Beach. Platelets, one of the components of blood, are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries. PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. To develop a PRP preparation, blood is taken from a patient. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood. It is expected that the increase in growth factors results in speeding up the healing process. PRP injections can be carefully injected into the injured area or may also be used to improve healing after surgery for some injuries.

These injections have been very helpful in addressing many foot treatments in North Miami Beach. Among the podiatric conditions that are treated by PRP injections are plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinosis, joint tendonitis, ligament damage, and conditions with swelling, pain, and limited range of motion. Regenerative therapy is known as a bridge between manual therapies, like physical therapy or massage therapy, and surgery. The fact that it is non-invasive and doesn’t require recovery makes it an ideal option for many podiatry and orthopedic conditions. To find out if regenerative therapy is right for you, give Dr. Horn a call today.

As life expectancy has increased, so has the wear and tear on the feet. Impairment of the lower extremities is a leading cause of activity limitation in older people. And a recent study reported that one-fourth of all nursing home patients cannot walk at all, while another one-sixth can walk only with assistance. Dr. Horn, the leading North Miami Beach geriatric podiatrist, has years of experience working with and taking care of the foot needs of his older patients. There are hundreds of different foot ailments. Some can be traced to heredity, but for an aging population, most of these ailments stem from the cumulative effect of years of neglect or abuse such as wearing ill-fitting shoes. However, even among people in their retirement years, many foot problems can be treated successfully, and the pain of foot ailments relieved.

Whether due to neglect or abuse, the normal wear and tear through the years causes changes in feet. As persons age, their feet tend to spread, and lose the fatty pads that cushion the bottom of the feet. Additional weight can affect the bone and ligament structure. Older people, consequently, should have their feet measured for shoe sizes more frequently, rather than presuming that their shoe sizes remain constant. Dry skin and brittle nails are other conditions older people commonly face. Finally, it’s a fact that women, young and old, have four times as many foot problems as men, and high heels are often the culprits. This North Miami Beach geriatric podiatrist understands that preventive foot health care has many benefits. Chief among them are that it can increase comfort, limit the possibility of additional medical problems, reduce the chances of hospitalization because of infection, and lessen requirements for other institutional care. Come in for a check-up today and enjoy your active lifestyle.

Podiatrist in North Miami Beach

Dr. Merrick L. Horn understands how important it is for you to treat painful foot conditions. He has been a leading podiatrist in North Miami Beach for over 40 years and is a skilled specialist. In addition to his medical knowledge and anatomical fluency, this board certified podiatrist is also an athlete with a subspecialty in sports injuries related to the lower leg, ankle and foot. He uses his knowledge of being a former athlete in serving his patients in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries. Dr. Horn was an accomplished NCAA gymnast, and was a member of the gold medal winning 1981 USA Gymnastic team. He also served as a personal trainer specializing in lower extremity rehabilitation. As a specialist in comprehensive lower leg, ankle, foot, and hammertoes, Dr. Horn utilizes the latest technology available to serve the needs of his patients.

A hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, so that it resembles a hammer. Initially, hammertoes are flexible and the treatment by this top podiatrist in North Miami is done with simple measures. However, if left untreated, they can become fixed and require surgery. People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes. The causes of hammertoe are shoes that don’t fit properly or a muscle imbalance, usually in combination with one or more other factors. If the toe is bent and held in one position long enough, the muscles tighten and cannot stretch out. Shoes that narrow toward the toe may make your forefoot look smaller, but they also push the smaller toes into a flexed (bent) position. The toes rub against the shoe, leading to the formation of corns and calluses, which further aggravate the condition. A higher heel forces the foot down and presses the toes against the shoe, increasing the pressure and the bend in the toe. Eventually, the toe muscles become unable to straighten the toe, even when there is no confining shoe.

Treatment starts conservatively with new shoes that have soft, roomy toe boxes. Shoes should be one-half inch longer than your longest toe. Avoid wearing tight, narrow, high-heeled shoes. You may also be able to find a shoe with a deep toe box that accommodates the hammertoe. Or, a shoe repair shop may be able to stretch the toe box so that it bulges out around the toe. Sandals may help, as long as they do not pinch or rub other areas of the foot. The podiatrist in North Miami will prescribe some toe exercises that you can do at home to stretch and strengthen the muscles. For example, you can gently stretch the toes manually. You can use your toes to pick things up off the floor. While you watch television or read, you can put a towel flat under your feet and use your toes to crumple it. In addition, over-the-counter straps, cushions or non-medicated corn pads can be used to relieve symptoms. If these non-invasive treatments don’t straighten the toe, surgery can correct the problem. Call Dr. Horn for an evaluation of your hammertoe today.

Bay Harbor toenail fungus

Bay Harbor Toenail Fungus

Laser treatment for toenail fungus in Bay Harbor

Bay Harbor toenail fungus

Bay Harbor toenail fungus

It is unsightly and embarrassing. Toenail fungus. Dr. Merrick L. Horn understands how important it is for you to treat and heal this unpleasant condition. He has been in his podiatry office in Bay Harbor for over 40 years and is a skilled specialist. As a specialist in comprehensive lower leg, ankle, foot, and Bay Harbor toenail fungus, Dr. Horn utilizes the latest technology available to serve the needs of his patients.

Toenail fungus is diagnosed through clinical cultures and identification of the involved organism. It is usually a thickened and yellowish-brown discolored nail plate surface. In most cases, the infection starts at the end of the toenail and progressively involves the remainder of the plate. The vast majority of fungus nails are asymptomatic or painless and for many, are more of a cosmetic problem than anything else. Most authorities agree that fungus nails are not contagious between people but a progressive involvement from one toe to another is still a confusing issue for many. Dr. Horn is skilled at treating Bay Harbor toenail fungus using technologically advanced laser treatments.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of lasers to treat toenail fungus in 2013. Lasers produce coherent light energy of a sufficient strength and of a specific wavelength, which when projected into tissue is absorbed, producing heat and destroying tissues. Other tissue components are unaffected and so spared. It is proposed that some lasers might work by heating up the nail sufficiently to discourage fungal infections. Another approach to laser treatment of the nails uses a fractional CO2 laser to burn holes in the nail plate through which topical antifungal medications can effectively penetrate. To discuss the use of lasers for your Bay Harbor toenail fungus, or to learn about Dr. Horn’s other podiatric services, give him a call today.
